The Central and Eastern Europe Centre Leipzig

A Centre for Co-Operations in Economy, Culture and Science

The process of the European unification takes Germany right back to the centre of Europe. It also makes new demands on the country, now acting as a link between the East and the West. Due to its historically grown position in the East-West trade tradition Leipzig possesses important preconditions to fulfil these new tasks.

The interest in co-operations between the East and the West European countries is growing permanently, especially in the fields of arts and culture, economy, trade and law, politics, education and sciences, tourism and travelling. Lately, this leads to a great demand for public as well as private initiatives supporting the East-West relations.

An extensive exchange is necessary to do justice to the historical dimension of the East-West dialogue and to represent the cultural processes of the present comprehensively. That exchange should take place between intellectual scientific as well as artistic forums of the Central and East European countries and German partners.

In this way, the socio-cultural infrastructures can be built best to support the newly developing and intensifying economic relations. In order to translate all these ideas into action it is necessary to create lively communication centres which combine economic and cultural competences.

The Central and Eastern Europe Centre in the Städtisches Kaufhaus is such a centre in the heart of Leipzig.
